Prepare for pioneering with your counselor
Pioneering develops rope handling, knot and lashing skills through practical projects. Start with your counselor's plan and the current Scouting America Pioneering requirements, which include linked learning resources.
Organize practice materials
Keep ropes sorted by type and length, inspect their condition and label supplies for the intended exercise. A short practice cord can help with learning a knot; it is not necessarily suitable for a structure that supports weight.
Work from skills to projects
Practice the required knots, whipping and lashings with supervision before using them in a larger project. Ask your counselor to review the material list, layout and completed connections.
Use current safety guidance
Projects must follow the applicable Guide to Safe Scouting requirements, including height restrictions. Do not rely on an old workbook as the sole source of current requirements. Rope finishing methods must suit the material and be performed with appropriate supervision.
When shopping, compare diameter, length and construction with the counselor-approved specification. General craft cord should not be substituted for structural rope merely because it is available.
