Breaking strength is not a working load limit

A rope's breaking-strength value describes performance under specified test conditions. It does not mean that the same load is appropriate in service. Check whether published data describes an average, a minimum or another defined measure.

Use the applicable working load

A working load limit applies to a defined product and set of conditions. Do not calculate an operating limit from a universal percentage of breaking strength. The required design factor and other limits depend on the application, product and applicable requirements.

Terminations and condition matter

Knots, splices, bends, abrasion, heat, chemical exposure and previous loading can affect performance. There is no single reduction percentage that applies to every knot in every rope. Use manufacturer-approved terminations and inspection guidance.

What a test video can show

The demonstrations below show specific samples being tested. They do not establish a rating for every diameter, material or finished assembly. Obtain the exact product's specification and documentation for load-related selection.

For critical applications, have qualified personnel select the complete system. General-purpose craft rope is not climbing or fall-protection equipment.
