The slotted entrance allows for sunlight to enter the house which is a good deterrent for Sparrows that don't like well-lit cavities. The slotted entrance disallows Sparrows to block the entrance and trap nesting female Bluebirds, and the nesting tray reduces cubic inches that make it impossible for Sparrows to nest in protecting the Bluebird's space and young birds.
